Petition to the Minister of Broadcasting in the New Zealand Government 2011:
Please continue to fund TVNZ7 after 2012.
TVNZ cannot fund TVNZ7 when it is required by your government to return a large dividend at a time of recession and industry contraction. We note that your government has removed all public broadcasting expectations from TVNZ’s remit. We like public broadcasting and we like TVNZ7.
As intelligent and educated people you and your colleagues must appreciate the more intelligent types of programmes screened on TVNZ7. We also hope you can see the value in it for NZ as a whole – inspiring Kiwis to take an interest in art, books, science, nature, advertising, media, legal matters, politics, architecture, the environment, youth and more. TVNZ 7 also:
- provides innovation for other channels and productions to copy
- informs the public
- provides good-quality locally-made programming for our children free and without advertising
- strengthens TVNZ’s market position
- and even provides free media training for backbencher politicians!
All western democracies have public broadcasting television – BBC, PBS in the US, SBS in Australia, throughout Europe, most of Asia, the Middle East, North and South America and even parts of Africa – all have public broadcasting television because it is good for the nation and the people demand it. New Zealand is no different.
We, the electronically under-signed, implore you to continue funding TVNZ7 at its current levels for many years beyond 2012.
