The vote the Government wouldn't let you have

A coalition of community organisations called Our Auckland is running a referendum on the Government’s super city, giving Aucklanders the chance to vote it up or down. You can vote here, and sign up with the Our Auckland facebook page for updates.

The campaign is supported by The Aucklander newspaper who have been doing a fantastic job covering the democratic travesty that is Rodney Hide’s super city. They gave one of the most articulate submissions to the select committee hearings on the third super city bill, and have been reflecting the anger and concern of Aucklanders at what the Government is doing to our democracy.

I think the people’s referendum is a fantastic initiative given that Aucklanders haven’t been asked if they wanted this thing. The Government has rammed through its agenda over the last year. They cannot even tell Aucklanders how much it is going to cost. All we know is that Aucklanders will have to pick up the tab.

Now is a good time to be having your say. The third super city bill comes back to the House at the end of this month. Tell the Government what you think! And tell your mates, twitter followers and facebook friends about the referendum.
