Red flag and safety car rules clarified
The red flag and safety car rules in Schedule Z applying to all racing are to be modified to bring them into line with what is current practice in the national race championships. The special Schedule CH developed for the championships has a simple red flag and restart process.
Race commission chairman Wayne Christie said that he and his Commission had reviewed all submissions at the AGCM and other comments before coming to the conclusion that alignment of the two procedures was the best approach.
“It removes any confusion for officials and competitors involved at championship, national and club level. The existing arrangement, where they have to operate under different regimes, was confusing. Aligning the two will remove any doubts and make it simpler for everyone.”
Under Schedule CH, red flagging requires racing to stop immediately and for cars to proceed back to the control line to await further instructions.
If a race is red flagged on the first lap then a full race start procedure is repeated.
If the safety car is deployed, when the safety car leaves the track, cars must maintain their position until the first car crosses the start finish line. The car in the lead at the time dictates the speed of the field.
Flag marshals will not be required to show a green flag for the first lap.
