The Generosity Hub

The Generosity Hub is raising awareness of giving in New Zealand. We want Kiwis to think about how we give, why we give and what we give. We want to celebrate and share the ways we give so that more people will show acts of kindness, give their time, their money and their experience to create a habit of giving for good.

With the backing of Philanthropy New Zealand, Volunteering New Zealand and the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector, the Generosity Hub has representatives from the community, philanthropy and business who are committed to growing generosity.

The Hub takes advice from a community of supporting organisations and individuals covering business, fundraising, the community and voluntary sector, sports, art, Māori, Pacific peoples and other ethnic groups, as well as Government.

By bringing all the different interests into the conversation, the Hub is able to support the work that is already going on across New Zealand as well as create some innovative, Kiwi initiatives. Together, our aim is to grow giving of money, time, acts of kindness and in-kind giving.

The vision for the Generosity Hub is a society where:

  • Giving is the norm - "It's what we do".
  • Everybody is recognising and celebrating generosity in all its forms.
  • Giving behaviours are understood, taught and promoted - "Make it magic".
  • Giving is supported by government, business and the community.
  • Inclusive and engaged communities are built and sustained.
  • We are all working together - individuals, organisations and sectors.

The Hub has four project groups:

1. Support new ways of giving

Encourage new, different and effective ways of giving. This includes; strengthening the culture of giving among those who have the ability and desire to give; building on existing giving movements such as Community Foundations, giving circles and Random Acts of Kindness Day; and fostering a greater understanding of cultural giving.

2. Promote generosity amongst young people

Engage and influence New Zealand youth to support giving using avenues such as the school curriculum, multi-media and youth organisations.

3. Grow business generosity

Support a Corporate Citizenship Business Network and help to embed Corporate Social Responsibility practices into business strategy. This project includes promoting payroll giving.

4. Use research to understand and support giving

Encourage and advocate for increasing the research about giving in New Zealand so that it is undertaken regularly, incorporating data on motivations for giving; how people are giving; to whom they give; and what they give; with the outcomes summarised and provided for all to use. The How do New Zealander’s Give research is part of this project. Find the research in the learning centre at www.givingforgood.org.nz.

The Hub also works at a strategic level with organisations and Government on concepts and material that will grow the levels of giving amongst all people and organisations in our communities.

Let's work together to build strong, generous people, communities and country.
