Improving access to medical abortion

This week in Australia doctors working in Marie Stopes International clinics were approved as providers of an early medical abortion service up to 9 weeks gestation. The TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) granted the approval and clinics in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and the ACT will begin offering this as a choice for women. This is good news taking medical abortion into community based clinics. After all, you don't need an expensive hospital to take two lots of pills.

In New Zealand Family Planning are leading the way here with their application to seek approval from the ASC to offer a medical abortion service as a choice for women.

Critics say that this will increase the numbers of abortion but experience from overseas shows that this is just not so. All it does is offer women a choice of method, not whether or not they will choose abortion.
